Hi,

I have Camry 2007 from US. And now I am in Canada. I never received any notification, may be because I am in Canada. I went for this test with local dealer at Brimell Toyota. The test was passed as it completely burnt 2 litre of oil in 1000 miles. Even dealer said id is burning oil way too much. This whole process took 2-3 months. This car was bought in November 2006. Now dealer is saying that car has passed the 10 years warranty period with 2 months, so we can not take it for repair. They suggested me to talk to Toyota Canada or US and if Toyota sends them email they will be more than happy to repair it.

I believe it is just 2 months over and as I was not aware of any campaigns going on, my request must be considered. May be this was because car is in Canada now and was first bought in US. This could damage even engine of the car as I am not even getting any message of low engine oil. And the oil consumption is increasing day by day.

Requesting you to please consider my request and send an email to the dealer. Please let me know in case any other details are required from my side.

Thank you.

Pankaj, you need to contact Toyota directly about this issue. You can do that here.

I have a 2009 Camry I took it in to get the oil consumption test in 9/16 with 138k miles. I change my own oil and I know that I have to add over 1.5 qts. Every 1,000 miles. When I took it in I know that I had overfilled it( problem #1 on my end) I just assumed that they would drain it to the proper level(problem #2). So the tech came out and told me that it tested within their guidelines and no further actions needed to be done. I knew that there was no way that it could be correct so I asked if I could get a retest? The tech said"you have plenty of time just drive it and keep an eye on it and if you feel it needs a retest just bring it in." So now here I am 4/3/17 just took it back in and was told that because I now have 157k miles I'm out of the warranty. I argued with the service mgr. and told him that it was a improper test and that the tech told me I have plenty of time but he said I needed to call headquarters. So I did and basically they say nope not covered. Is there anything else I can do?

My 2008 RAV4 is consuming more oil than it should. If my engine meet the criteria set forth by Toyota to be included in the repair, does anyone know if Toyota gives a warranty on the work that is done to correct this problem ? Thanks.

The warranty on this repair should be like any other repair performed at the Dealer, one year/unlimited miles.

I returned my camry 2008 ( purchased on Oct 31, 2007) and it failed the oil consumption test, and they said my mileage of 194600 has exceeded the secondary warranty limit of 150k miles. They said it should not have been serviced for the oil test because they overlooked that it had already exceeded the warranty. Well, I am now screwed. The oil consumption problem has only started to be noticeable well after 150k miles limit. I am no longer covered. I AM NOW VERY VERY UPSET. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALL. THIS IS JUST BS. I AM BOYCOTTING ALL TOYOTA CARS. I am now unsure what to do. My repair rep didn't give me any advice but basically said sorry you're on your own. Any advice?

My name is Benny, and I have a 2009 Scion xB with 120k miles, last Feb, the vehicle failed the oil consumption test at 95k miles, but due to the shorts in parts required for the job, my car hadn't got fix until last Sept.

And then only 6 months after the repair is done, I realized there are some noise from the bottom of my car. So I bought it back to the dealership, and they found out that there are problems at the balance shaft.

And now, the dealer is declining the responsibility saying they only replace the piston and the piston ring, and have nothing to do with the cause of the failure of the balance shaft. And I opened a case with Toyota, but they also declined the responsibility, saying that can cause by other reason, and also refused any type of assistant due to the decision made from their "tech".

I read some post here regarding some owners here also have the exact same situation like I did, and able to get it resolved. So, is there anything I can do on my situation?

Thanks in advance for your help, and I feel really hopeless with the way Toyota is handling the case.

I can understand how you feel and the only advice would be to contact Toyota directly but I doubt that they will do anything at this point.

This repair should come with a 1year/unlimited mileage warranty but if both the Dealer and Toyota are unwilling to help, then it may be time to consult with an attorney to see if you have a case.

For the warranty information (1 year/unlimited mileages) you mentioned, does it cover the whole engine? Or like the dealer said, only the parts (pistons/piston rings) which repaired is cover?

In additional, just by searching around here, I do able to found someone with the same situation, seem like for some reason, Toyota was able to work something out for this owner. I aren't sure why my case is that much difference. So disappointed on how they react so far.

The only thing you can do is keep up pressure on Toyota to repair this. It may take an attorney to step in and help.

That sound a bit complicated, do I need an attorney to write Toyota a letter for the claim? Or do I simply let them know I will seek for legal advice for my next action?

Just to seek legal advice and maybe write a letter if that is what he/she deems is in your best interest to get this covered by Toyota.

Initially, Toyota will inform Owners that they may seek reimbursement consideration for previous repairs top address excessive oil consumption. Additionally, Owners will be advised that if they believe their vehicle has excessive oil consumption, they can contact an authorized Toyota Dealer to have the engine oil consumption test performed to determine if they will be eligible for future part replacement once sufficient parts are available. Once sufficient parts are produced, Toyota will send a second Owner notification letter informing them that they may seek part replacement if their vehicle has excessive engine oil consumption.

Limited Service Campaign (LSC) Remedy
Authorized Toyota dealerships are requested to replace the Engine Pistons at NO CHARGE to the
vehicle’s owner.

The Primary Coverage offers warranty enhancement until October 31, 2016 regardless of mileage.

The Secondary Coverage is applicable for 10 years from the (DOFU) Date Of First Use or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

I was never notified and when I found out about this issue I took my car in. Per your standards of testing, my car passed. However, my car, like many others, burns the most oil after 1300 miles. Just the other day I had to put two quarts of oil in because my oil light was on. Of course my car has over 150,000 miles so you won't own up to it. Can you at least tell me what parts you change in addition to the pistons?

The parts that get changed are the pistons and any engine seals/gaskets (not valve stem seals). If you have any concerns then you need to contact Toyota directly and let them know. Thanks

I have a 2008 Rav4 with 115K miles on it. We are the second owners. On Wednesday of last week, about 1 minute into driving, the 4WD light, the VSC light, the battery light, and oil light came on and the car became sluggish. I was not able to pull over immediately as I was driving my two young daughters and in an area with no cell service. The car stalled a few minutes later and was smoking. The tow company said the serpentine belt was broken. Another person said there was something that looked like oil all over the manifold.

Our regular mechanic says the water pump broke and he can't get any compression from the engine, i.e. the engine has failed.

Our vehicle has had an oil change at least every 5K miles since it was purchased by the original owner. Our last oil change was early February and since then we'd added 3 quarts of oil for less than 3 K miles. We bought the car in April 2015, apparently after the extended warranty info was sent and never knew about this issue until now, when our engine is dead.

After lots of research discovered this issue, I called Toyota about it and opened a case. I was planning on taking the car to the dealership where we purchased our Prius and spoke with the service manager. I specifically asked him about the possibility of them determining that the engine failure was at least in part related to this issue given that you can't do an oil consumption test on a vehicle that won't run. He said they could look at the engine otherwise to make that determination.

Today, I got a call from Toyota that the District Service Manager had returned the case back to them because the car is ineligible under the warranty because it can perform the consumption test. Someone higher up (Miguel?) is supposed to be calling me back tomorrow. I spoke with the dealership again and they did not give any indication (nor reassurance) that they could still look at the engine to determine if its failure was due to the oil issue. Really, they did not seem concerned at all about keeping our business as Toyota owners.

So, next steps? My biggest concern now is that even if we get the engine replaced, isn't it going to be defective too?? Why should we have to pay full price for a defective engine? And, should I even bother with Toyota any more or just take it to our trusted engine mechanic?

I have a 2007 Camry LE. The oil indicator flickered yesterday briefly, so quick I almost missed it. I came home and checked and it was 2.5 quarts low. This has never happened before and I now have 153K miles. Looks like I'm screwed.
I never got a letter either. I have had several Toyotas through the years. I will be replacing this vehicle shortly but not with another Toyota. Never again.

I own 2007 Toyota Camry 4cyl le . how come I never rec'd letter on oil consumption? am I still eligible to get it fixed?

I never got one either. I experienced this issue but it resulted in engine failure before I could get the car tested for the issue. I never got a letter and I had no warning or indication of the issue until it was too late. Toyota told me I could pay for a pull apart, repair and reinstall of my engine so they could run the oil consumption test. Issue was, I had no guarantee of reimbursement. ~$3500-$4000 out of pocket. I couldn't do it. Such a big corporation can't own up to an issue and help out a person who barely gets by. Gross!

Also the deadline for warranty extension was Oct. 2016

Ashton, the Primary Warranty Coverage ended as of Oct 2016 and that was for Unlimited Vehicle Mileage and years.

The Secondary Warranty Coverage is now in effect which covers this repair as long as the vehicle is less than 10 years from the date of first use and has less than 150,000 miles. Some vehicles still qualify to have this repair performed.

That's what the dealership is telling me, too. Since the engine doesn't run, they can't run the test and since they can't run the test, the warranty doesn't cover it.

Worst part is that if they use used parts to repair the engine, this extended warranty won't cover it. So, it's either 8K for new, guaranteed parts, or $4K for used, non-guaranteed parts and no remedy if I have the same issue....for a vehicle with 115K miles that has been in every 3-5K miles for an oil change.

It seems like a new class action needs to develop based on people similarly situated who have premature engine failure but did not do the oil consumption test. I'm a lawyer, though this is not my area of practice, but I am doing lots of research on the issue.
