Some Highlander Owners have had concerns about the rear hatch window will unlock or open when the vehicle is started. The repair for this is to replace the rear hatch window open switch on the rear hatch. Here are some Highlander Owners Discussing this concern.

The rear hatch window switch is the culprit with this concern and it needs to be replaced.

The first step will be to open the rear hatch and pull off the back panel. It is held on by quite a few white colored clips.

You then need to disconnect a few electrical connectors and locate the five 10mm stud nuts and remove them.

Don't forget about the two clips on either end of the rear panel plate.

This is what it will look like when the plate with the switch is removed.

Now just remove the old switch that is held in by one screw and a securing plate.

Thanks for posting this, fixed mine, looked like I was getting a bit of moisture in there, put new o-rings around the 5 bolts / nuts when I put back together. Helps to have a few spare panel fasteners also as some may break when pulling off the back panel.

thanks for your help - this saved me lots of cash. Toyota Australia wanted $200AUD for the part and $300 for 2 hrs labour. That's after I paid them $150 to diagnose the issue (which i had already done - told them i needed the latch release button replaced).

With your help, I fixed it in under 30mins and found the part for about $80AUD delivered
