Toyota Scolds Trump Over Trade. Here’s Who Makes Cars in America.


The White House said on Friday that Wilbur Ross’s Department of Commerce concluded auto imports are a threat to national security in a so-called Section 232 trade report. Toyota pushed back shortly after with a strongly worded response.

The Commerce Department report points out American-owned producers’ share of the domestic automobile market has contracted from 67% in 1985 to 22% in 2017. Yet Toyota Motor (ticker: TM) says it builds millions of cars in the U.S. while employing hundreds of thousands of American workers.
