The auto industry is making good progress toward a voluntary commitment to equip all cars with automatic emergency braking technology (AEB) by 2022, according to safety officials.

In a joint press release, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said four of 20 automakers now have standard AEB on at least half their 2017 model year vehicles. It's the first progress report since the industry vowed in 2016 to equip virtually all new passenger vehicles with the crash-prevention technology by 2022.
