Excessive Oil Consumption on 2AZ-FE Engine LSC ZE7

In last Dec., I noted “no engine oil” indicator was lit, and I took my vehicle to a local service center. Toyota told me that my RAV4 may be consumed oil at an abnormal rate, need testing at 2000 km. When my RAV4 is driving to about 2000 km, Toyota told me that I do not qualify to have ZET because my RAV4 is over 10 years.

My question is that I did not get nay letters about the Warrant Enhancement Program for RAV4 2006, and I had a oil change in July 2016 (before the primary coverage offers Oct. 31, 2016). Toyota did not tell me even if they know my RAV4 had Excessive Engine Oil Consumption problem.

My Scion XB just failed the Oil Consumption test. Dealer is ordering parts. They have recommend for an added cost to replace the following parts. Please let me know your thoughts on replacing these parts.
Timing Chain
Timing chain tensioner
8 countershaft bearings
2 camshaft bearings
oil pump
Thanks

Hi! I never received a letter about this and didn't know it was out there until about a week ago. My 2009 Camry was burning oil so I took it in and they replaced the oil pan...etc; however, this didn't fix the excessive burning of oil. So I did what any normal person would do and googled why is my Camry burning so much oil? Its only then I heard about the piston rings. I'm burning through all my oil within 2k miles of my last oil change.

If any of these internal parts are in fact "needed" then Toyota should pay for them. If they are merely a recommendation by the Dealer and not necessarily needed, then its on you to purchase them but I wouldn't do so personally.

After the oil consumption repair what is the warranty on the engine?
Good luck in getting Toyota to fix these faulty engines. My grandson's Scion has been at North Georgia Toyota for over a month. I have a case number and have contacted Scion headquarters several times. THESE FOLKS DONT HAVE A CLUE. Scion rep told me I had to get engine repaired before they would do an oil consumption test. Scion rep also told me that the pistons were not part of the engine. Toyota District Mgr Mark Coleman told me two weeks ago that he had sent papers to Toyota and that I should hear from "them".

Excessive Oil Consumption by Faulty Toyota Engines. I got a call on 3/2/17 from Jay Mahoney at Toyota Headquarters (800-331-4331 Ext 73810). Mahoney said that an oil consumption test had to be started by 10/31/16 in order for the 150,000 extended warranty to be applicable. I told him that local Toyota Svc Mgr, Toyota District Mgr and the folks at Scion headquarters did not know this. He was insistent and basically said these parties did not know what they were talking about. The car has been at North Georgia Toyota for weeks waiting on a decision from Toyota. If Mahoney is correct, it has been an enormous waste of time by alI involved. Do you agree with Mahoney?

PS Below is a portion of a letter sent to car owners which Mahoney said proves his point. I don't think it says what Mahoney contends at all. What is your interpretation?

"This Warranty Enhancement Program provides a Primary and Secondary coverage extension to the vehicle’s “New Vehicle Limited Warranty” for replacement of parts related to Excessive Engine Oil Consumption. If the condition is verified, warranty work will be performed in accordance with the applicable Technical Service Bulletin under the terms of this Warranty Enhancement Program*.

  •  The Primary Coverage offers warranty enhancement until October 31, 2016, regardless of mileage.

  •  After the Primary Coverage period ends, the Secondary Coverage is applicable for 10 years from the date of first use or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Please note that this coverage is for warranty work performed at an authorized Toyota dealer only."

WHAT IS YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THIS LETTER?
The letter not withstanding, the rules are simple and must be followed by every Toyota Dealer. The Primary coverage--until October 31, 2016, regardless of mileage, is now over and Owners have to follow the secondary coverage. This is applicable for 10 years from the date of first use (DOFU) or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

If your grandson's Scion has less than 150,000 miles and is under 10 years old from the DOFU, then they should start the oil consumption test and see if the engine fails.

How many miles are on this Scion and what is the Date of First Use?

The DOFU can be found on the Dealer TIS (Technical Information System) by entering your vehicles VIN number. This system is available to every Service Manager, Service Adviser, Technician and Parts personnel in the Dealer.

Hello folks,

My question is what is the average cost for this repair out of pocket? Based on what everyone is saying I am just preparing myself for Toyota to give me the run around as I am taking my vehicle in this weekend.

Hello it is March 13 and last December 2016 my shop that does my oil changes mentioned to me that i was going thru oil to quickly and that Toyota had a oil consumption testing going on. So I called Germain Toyota that day and spoke to a Dawn, in service. I explained all that was going on and she told me to call back when the light comes back on for the oil and they will schedule a oil change and start the test. On Feb 27, I took my car to my shop and they checked the oil because the light came onand i was going out of town. They said it was down 2 quarts and I still have over 2500 miles to go till my next oil change was due to be done. I immediately called Germain and spoke to Kelly and she scheduled my oil change with them for March 4th. When I got there on the 4th, after they took my car in the service dept they came and told me that the oil consumption testing was over in OCTOBER of last year!?!? Why did they DAWN AND KELLY not tell me this when i talked to Dawn in Dec and Kelly in Feb? The manager, Willy was useless... he said and repeated I am sorry this testing is over. So now what do i do if my car does have whatever the issue will be because of this oil consumption issue? I did what i was told to do AS SOON AS I WAS TOLD about this testing .... and I never got a letter from Toyota telling about this issue years ago.... I moved so perhaps Toyota did not have my new address. But that all being said, I am extremely concerned about my car. It is a 2007 Solara , that has 87500 miles on it and I have been told to not sell it- even though i paid it off FINALLY last year. Everyone says to keep it because Toyotas are so good - but i am very worried about this engine issue. TOYOTA could care less
The manager at Germain told me to call Toyota's 800 number, I did twice. But both times they told me it is no longer available and if i want to talk any more about it , contact my dealership. And the dealership tells me to call the 800 .... some great customer service for a woman who is trying to take care of her car. M. Fosmire

After reading your TSB concerning Toyota's acceptable guidelines of 1 quart of used oil per 1200 miles has sealed my lifetime boycott of all Toyota products. Anyone with knowledge about engines knows that a well designed, well tuned engine doesn't burn ANY oil, much less a quart every 1200 miles. I'm in the market for a new car and Toyota is no longer "in the hunt" if you get my drift.

I had a 2008 V6 Honda Accord with the exact same issue. They recalled all 4 cylinders for excessive oil consumption and VIN specific V6s. Mine happened to not be one of them recalled. I sealed a boycott for Honda and traded the Accord for a Highlander. It sounds like this is common now among different brands, and I'm not happy about it. I put almost 1,000 miles on my car in 3 weeks.

After my second oil consumption test Toyota rebuilt my engine. While they had it apart they said that my water pump was "seeping" did I want it replaced? $250 to replace it while the engine is apart, "your cylinder head has deposits built up, $200 to clean it up, $71 for a new serpentine belt." So now my free piston/ ring replacement is going to cost me close to $700 out of pocket. I had them replace the belt. The next time I pulled out of the garage I found a pool of coolant on the floor. Returned to dealer, said they would replace pump for $550 now because of all the labor. I replied that I didn' t have antifreeze on my floor before. They replaced the pump and coolant for a total of $320. So now I'm up over $400 for the free repairs. Now I smell coolant through the ventilation, my exhaust is now leaking and I swear I hear a whine from my transmission that I never heard before. Did I get sabotaged or am I paranoid. I have had no problems with this car until now. It now has 123,000 miles on it . These days that should be only middle aged. this is only the short story, but I type so slowly and have to go to work tomorrow. Oh, and I have to call the dealer to find out where the coolant smell is coming from. Or should I just take it to my mechanic that I trust and eat the expense. Why do dealers have a bad reputation and people avoid them. I just feel that Toyota isn't treating people like they want them to come back for more of their of products. Judging from other comments on this site Toyota is going to loose a lot of customers, and they don't really seem to care. Do they think they're to big to fail?

Why am I just hearing about the warranty enhancement now? We have a 2009 Camry, purchased new. It has used oil ever since we purchased the vehicle. We never received a letter and it is now past the Oct. 2016 enhancement and we have more than 150,000 miles on our vehicle. Even when this was brought up to the dealership a couple years ago, they never mentioned anything about an oil consumption test or even the warranty enhancement. There remedy was to stop using synthetic oil and switch to conventional because it was more expensive if we needed to add oil between changes. This is more upsetting since we were turned away from the dealership when we mentioned the concern of the excess oil consumption. What is the solution to our situation?

I own a Scion tC 2007. I am the second owner of the vehicle, yet it is paid for. I bought the car on January 5th 2013, with around 117 thousand miles on it. For about 4 months my car has been consuming a lot of oil, yet there is no leak. I have to put oil in the car at around every 1200 miles. I love my car. I went to Toyota to ask about the issue they said that I qualified for an oil consumption test so they scheduled me for an appointment. So that I can drive the amount of miles listed to see if I qualify for an engine rebuild. 03/24/17, today, after three hours to be told that I didn't qualify because I've met the mileage in which was 150 thousand or 10 years of first use. They descripided first use as the first use of the car period meaning the year 2006, the first owner of the car. They did not tell me that when I asked about it. My mileage is currently at 183. I love my car and if there was an issue with oil consumption...I was never notified being the second owner. Repair cost are around 5000 they quoted me without being able to look inside the engine...just an estimate. ...heart breaking

I have a 2010 scion xb with a 2.4L engine. I live in New Jersey (40 degrees north latitude). I use 5-20w motor oil. I see no problem with oil consumption.

I have 2009 Scion XB I took my car in for the oil consumption test last year 2016 they said I passed but my car had been using oil continually I did not agree with that test they said I had to wait six months and have the test done again I just now took my car in to the dealership and they said yes my car is part of the oil consumption warranty enhancement and that they are going to change the Pistons but I am responsible for the O-rings and the gaskets and I have to pay $850 has anyone else had the same experience?

The repair should be covered like any other Toyota repair, 1 year/Unlimited miles.

The dealership is recommending that I have the valve stem guides changed for a total of $850 everybody else's quoting about half that amount

Hi,

I have Camry 2007 from US. And now I am in Canada. I never received any notification, may be because I am in Canada. I went for this test with local dealer at Brimell Toyota. The test was passed as it completely burnt 2 litre of oil in 1000 miles. Even dealer said id is burning oil way too much. This whole process took 2-3 months. This car was bought in November 2006. Now dealer is saying that car has passed the 10 years warranty period with 2 months, so we can not take it for repair. They suggested me to talk to Toyota Canada or US and if Toyota sends them email they will be more than happy to repair it.

I believe it is just 2 months over and as I was not aware of any campaigns going on, my request must be considered. May be this was because car is in Canada now and was first bought in US. This could damage even engine of the car as I am not even getting any message of low engine oil. And the oil consumption is increasing day by day.

Requesting you to please consider my request and send an email to the dealer. Please let me know in case any other details are required from my side.

Thank you.
